Who We Are
Maria and Dan are two wholehearted enthusiasts of the Sannio region. Their journey to bringing friends and guests to the Sannio region has followed a rather unconventional path though. They were both patent lawyers who spent their careers at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. They met when they happened to start on the same day. All the while, however, Maria harbored a vision of introducing others to this magical corner of Italy, where customs and traditions remain steadfast. She and Dan both feel that the area’s rich culinary traditions, hidden treasures, and the heartfelt warmth of its people should be experienced by more people. After retiring, they decided to turn this vision into reality. So they now host curated, intimate programs that allow travelers to experience the joyous, unhurried, and genuine way of life that the Sannio offers.

Maria’s Story
Maria Nuzzolillo was born in the medieval village of San Lorenzello, nestled in the heart of the Sannio region. Her childhood was spent between her family home in San Lorenzello and her grandparents’ home in nearby Cerreto Sannita. It was here, with her extended family, that Maria’s deep appreciation for tradition took root. She still cherishes memories of her nonna: making bread and taralli in the bread oven that still graces the kitchen; hearing nonna’s gentle voice murmuring ancient incantations to ward off the malocchio, or evil eye; smelling the rich aroma of a simmering Sunday sugo (sauce), served as the church bells rang at noon.
Though more than 50 years have passed since Maria emigrated to the U.S. with her family, her love for this enchanting area of Italy never waned. Her dream has always been to share this little-known gem of the Campania region, often overlooked by tourists. Here, time stands still. You can still breathe in the mouthwatering scents of pranzo drifting through the cobblestone streets. Folklore and superstitions are woven into the fabric of daily life. And passion for good food and the importance of sharing it with family and friends never wane.
Dan’s Story
Dan Stemmer is a relative newcomer to the Sannio region but shares Maria’s love for it. Dan was taken with its beauty while visiting Maria’s extended family and the home of her nonna. After a few visits and seeing how much the area meant to Maria, Dan suggested buying a house in the area, much to Maria’s surprise. While Dan will tell you that this was solely an act of selfless love, he may have happened to notice the great scenery, great food, great people, and plentiful sunshine.
They now own a home (their tenth wedding anniversary gift to each other) in the village of San Lupo, a small hill town, not far from Maria’s childhood hometowns of Cerreto Sannita and San Lorenzello. San Lupo is a medieval town seemingly untouched by time. The buildings crafted from the local white stone, the tiny alleyways, and the steep inclines are reminiscent of a fairytale. Accessible only by descending over thirty stone stairs, this home is a testament to their continuing appreciation of and affection for the area.
